Why your hotel needs its own booking website
Online travel agencies bring guests, but they also take a commission and keep the relationship. Here is what a direct booking website gives a hotel that a listing cannot.
Most hotels start out on the big online travel agencies, and for good reason: that is where travellers search. The trouble comes when those listings are the only place a guest can book. Every reservation then carries a commission, and the guest belongs to the platform rather than to the hotel.
A listing is rented space
On a listing page your hotel sits next to every competitor in town, laid out in the same template, sorted by rules you do not control. Your own website is the one place where the photography, the story and the offers are entirely yours.
What a direct booking website should do
- Let guests check availability and book from the first screen
- Show rooms, dining and facilities with real photography
- Give guests a clear reason to book direct, such as a better rate or an extra
- Work well on a phone, where most travel browsing happens
- Let your team update rates, offers and content without a developer
Direct and agency bookings work together
This is not a case for leaving the agencies. Many guests discover a hotel on a platform and then look it up directly before deciding. A fast, trustworthy website with a booking engine is what turns that visit into a direct reservation.
If you are planning a new hotel website, start from the booking journey and build the rest of the site around it.
